Prerequisite/Corequisite Validation

When a course has a prerequisite and/or corequisite and the course was completed at a community college outside of RCCD or at a university, the course must be validated before registration can occur. Requisites are stated in the college catalog and within the course description on MyPortal.

You may provide verification through the following:

Official Documentation
Once your official transcripts are on file (you may verify this through WebAdvisor by clicking STUDENTS > Check Transcripts Received by RCCD), complete a Request for Prerequisite Validation form.

Unofficial Documentation
A counselor will accept an unofficial transcript and complete a Matriculation Appeal Petition to request validation of a prerequisite and/or corequisite. Students are recommended to connect with a counselor through express counseling or by emailing a counselor.

If you wish to challenge a prerequisite for courses other than English, Math or ESL based on knowledge, ability, or because of the unavailability of the prerequisite, submit your supporting documentation to a counselor and a Matriculation Appeal Petition will be completed.

Please Note:

  • C- grades and below do not satisfy a prerequisite.
  • We can only accept transcripts from the original institution; courses listed on a secondary transcript are not acceptable.
  • In-progress grades are not accepted. Your transcript must indicate the final grade.
  • A Request for Prerequisite Validation and a Matriculation Appeal Petition may take up to 5 business days to process.

High School Foreign Language
Students who completed two years or more of a foreign language in high school with a C or better may submit their high school transcript to validate a foreign language prerequisite.

Challenging Your Placement: Opting into English 1A without English 91
Every student has the right to enroll directly into English 1A without taking English 91. If you have been placed into English 1A+91 as a recommendation, you do not need to challenge your placement and opt into English 1A. Simply enroll in English 1A as you would other classes. If you have been placed into English 1A+91 as a requirement, follow the two steps below.
  • Step 1: Fill out the English 91 Challenge/Opt-Out Form
(NOTE: Please log in with your student.rccd.edu email address and password). The form should take 2-3 minutes to complete.
  • Step 2: Submit the completed form. Your form will be processed within 5 working days.

Please Note: If you choose to enroll in an ENG-1A section tied to an ENG-91 section, you cannot opt out of the ENG-91 section. You must choose an ENG-1A stand-alone section.

Student Educational Plan

A Student Education Plan is your roadmap to success. It lists all the courses necessary to achieve your academic goals. Students without an educational plan run the risk of taking unnecessary courses, wasting time AND money.

In order for a counselor to assist you in developing a plan, they will need to know the following:

1. Your major and/or your career goal

2. If you are planning to transfer, to which university/universities are you planning to transfer

Are you undecided about your career, major and/or which university to transfer? Select career, major or transfer to explore your options.

Career - visit our Career Center
Major  - visit our Counseling page to schedule an appointment with a Counselor to review major requirements and/or options
Transfer - visit our Transfer Center

Student Educational Plans are now made in EduNav, our online course and degree planner. Counseling is moving away from paper Student Educational Plans and is now using EduNav, an online course planning tool. It is a combination of both the SEP AND a semester-by-semester plan. View a sample Student Education Plan (SEP) made in EduNav.

If you change your educational goal, major and/or transfer institution, please meet with a counselor to update your educational plan. If you have attended another college/s, you must request to have an official transcript(s) sent to Norco College before scheduling an appointment for a Student Educational Plan.

Please note, due to a high demand for counseling during the winter and summer sessions, it is highly recommended that continuing students see a counselor during the spring and fall semesters to complete a Student Educational Plan.
