Distinguished Faculty Lecture Explores Social Media and Mental Health

Norco College | May 12, 2026

Norco College proudly welcomed the 64th RCCD Distinguished Faculty Lecture, featuring Adviye Tolunay, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Moreno Valley College, hosted by the Riverside Community College District. Her presentation, “Anti-Social Media: Memes, Echo Chambers, and Toxic Anonymity,” explored how algorithm-driven social media platforms are shaping communication, behavior, and mental health.

Tolunay examined how platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok influence what users see by prioritizing highly engaging, algorithmically selected content. She discussed both the benefits of social media connection and information-sharing, as well as concerns related to mental health, attention, and the amplification of emotionally charged content.

A key focus of the lecture was how algorithms can contribute to echo chambers, where repeated exposure to similar content reinforces beliefs and limits diverse perspectives. Tolunay also touched on online anonymity and disinhibition, the role of memes in shaping communication and coping, and the broader mental health impacts of constant digital engagement, particularly among younger users.

The presentation encouraged greater awareness of how these systems operate and emphasized the importance of intentional and balanced engagement with digital media.

Tolunay closed by inviting reflection on how individuals can stay connected in a digital world while also remaining mindful of their well-being and overall online experiences.
