Norco College’s College Corps program hosted a day of service in honor of Dolores Huerta and her contributions to the farmworker movement.
In collaboration with Huerta del Valle Community Farm in Ontario, staff and students supported organic, pesticide-free agricultural practices by helping prepare garden plots for planting. The experience also included opportunities to engage with master gardeners, connect with community members who utilize low-cost garden plots, and participate in a tasting of raw nopal (cactus).
Participants also learned from Maria Alonso, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Huerta del Valle, who established the nonprofit in 2010 to provide her family and community with access to whole foods that support health and vitality. Today, the organization also hosts weekly farmers markets, provides produce boxes at break-even cost, and offers community programs such as the Abejas Junior Gardener Program for early elementary-aged children.
The day was marked by meaningful service, hands-on learning, and community building. Norco College looks forward to continued partnership with Huerta del Valle Community Farm.
