From High School to Future Surgeon: AJ Darcy’s Pathway to Success

Norco College | Apr 14, 2026

When AJ Darcy graduated from JFK Middle College High School in June 2025, they left with an academic foundation that far exceeded that of a typical high school senior. Through Norco College’s Middle College program, AJ earned four associate degrees alongside their high school diploma, including an Associate of Science in Math and Science, as well as Associate of Arts degrees in Social and Behavioral Studies, Humanities, Philosophy and Arts, and Communications, Media and Languages. As a biochemistry major, AJ devoted significant time to STEM coursework, setting the stage for the rigorous academic path they now pursue.

AJ was initially drawn to the Middle College program because it provided the rare opportunity to take free college courses while still in high school. Middle College is a form of Dual Enrollment, a program that offers high school students access to subjects not typically available at the high school level and creates a meaningful head start on their college education. That early exposure for AJ proved invaluable. Becoming familiar with the rhythm of college classes—how professors structure assignments, exams, and expectations—made the transition to full-time college far easier. Instead of stepping into something unfamiliar after graduation, AJ already understood what college-level coursework looked like, allowing them to build discipline and confidence well before enrolling at Norco College full-time.

A significant part of AJ’s success came from taking advantage of resources available on campus. They found support in the Learning Resource Center and the library, which provided quiet study environments and access to course materials. These spaces quickly became part of AJ’s academic routine and helped them develop strong study habits early on. At the same time, AJ began building a sense of belonging at Norco College. Even while still in high school, they described the campus as a “second home,” a place where they felt welcome and connected. Their involvement grew as they joined various programs and clubs, forming relationships that later deepened once they enrolled full-time.

AJ’s Dual Enrollment experience also opened the door to leadership and service opportunities that shaped their college journey. They volunteered at numerous community and campus events, including Norco College’s Harvest Festival, and partnered with local organizations such as the Norco Kiwanis Club. This dedication to serving the community earned AJ a $1,000 scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Norco—one of their proudest accomplishments from their Dual Enrollment years. AJ’s leadership extended to student government, where they became a member of Associated Students of Norco College (ASNC) and served as the Senator of Activities, using their firsthand Dual Enrollment experience to advocate for student events and ensure that dual-enrolled students were included and represented.

Today, AJ continues to be a deeply involved and influential presence on campus. They serve as Vice President of both the STEM Club and the Molecular Society, Director of Media for the Caduceus Chapter Club, and an active member of the Honors Society, MESA, EOPS, TRIO, MOC, and PRISM. This level of engagement reflects the strong foundation built during AJ’s high school years and the confidence gained from being part of the college environment early on.

Academically, Dual Enrollment played a central role in shaping AJ’s long-term goals. Experiences in Norco College’s biology and chemistry courses provided insight into the realities of studying a STEM major at the college level, particularly through immersive lab work. These early academic opportunities inspired AJ’s goal of becoming a surgeon who serves underrepresented communities, including LGBTQ+ patients. Involvement in clubs like the Unity Zone and PRISM further supported AJ’s exploration of identity-affirming spaces, meaningful connections, and the kind of impact they hope to make as a healthcare professional.

After high school, AJ chose to remain at Norco College to complete transfer prerequisites before moving on to UC Irvine through the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program. Because they completed their IGETC requirements during high school, AJ now has the flexibility to focus on advanced STEM coursework, participate in research projects, shadow healthcare professionals, and stay engaged in multiple extracurricular activities; experiences essential to preparing for medical school.

Dual Enrollment was far more than a head start for AJ; it was a life-changing experience that shaped their academic trajectory, leadership identity, and long-term aspirations. Today, as they continue to excel at Norco College, AJ stands as a powerful example of what students can achieve when they step into college early, embrace opportunities, and use their education to build a future defined by purpose, service, and community.

“Dual Enrollment did more than prepare me for college; it showed me what I’m capable of. Once you see the path ahead, you stop doubting whether you belong and start believing in what you can become.”
