Norco College’s Umoja Graduation Celebration, held Thursday, June 12, in the John F. Kennedy Middle College High School Commons, honored students who are transferring, earning associate degrees, or completing certificate programs. The celebration marked a major milestone in each graduate’s academic journey.

More than 100 guests, including students, families, faculty, and community partners, gathered to celebrate the graduates. The event reflected Umoja’s mission as a federally recognized program serving African Americans and other historically underrepresented students. Rooted in African-centered practices and values, Umoja provides a culturally responsive and supportive learning environment where students feel seen, empowered, and equipped to thrive.

At Norco College, Umoja continues to flourish under the leadership of Darnell Bing, Ed.D., Umoja coordinator and counseling faculty member. Bing and his team of faculty, mentors, and counselors foster a space where students are encouraged to grow academically, culturally, and personally.

Norco College and the Riverside Community College District champion equity-centered programs, such as Umoja, ensuring that all students have access to resources, mentorship, and culturally relevant support. Programs like Umoja help students graduate and reach their full potential.

100 Black Men of Inland Empire, a community partner supporting student success, attended the event and provided each graduate with Crumbl Cookies and a congratulatory token. The organization highlighted its Umoja Scholarship Fund, established in 2023, to assist Umoja students.

“This celebration reflects what’s possible when students are seen, supported, and celebrated,” said David Morrow, Ph.D., president of 100 Black Men of Inland Empire. “We established the Umoja Scholarship Fund because we believe in long-term impact. These students are our future leaders, and we are proud to stand beside Umoja and Norco College in helping them rise.” Morrow attended with several board members.

The evening included speeches from graduates that brought tears and cheers. One student said, “Umoja gave me the confidence to believe I could succeed. It gave me a family that always had my back. This program changed my life.”

Congratulations to the Umoja Class of 2025.
