Norco College student Maria Marin-Negrete was recently honored at the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Commitment Day Ceremony, a celebration recognizing students who are part of the Inland Empire’s growing apprenticeship network. The event brought together educators, community partners, and students to celebrate the power of “earn-and-learn” opportunities that lead to rewarding careers.

For Maria, the day was more than a ceremony—it was a milestone in a journey defined by perseverance, purpose, and hope.

“When they told us, ‘Apprentices, you may sign,’ I was about to burst into tears,” Maria shared. “It was an incredible moment. I even kept the pen—they told us we could, but honestly, I wasn’t going to give it up either way.”

Maria’s path to teaching began with challenges that could have derailed her. As a high school freshman, she faced a difficult period that led her to a continuation school—a turning point that changed everything.

“That’s where I realized how much of an impact teachers really have,” she explained. “They’re not just there to teach lessons; they’re role models. The teachers there showed me what support and compassion look like, and that made me want to be that person for my future students.”

Now 18 years old, Maria is pursuing her Early Childhood Education studies at Norco College as part of the LAUNCH Apprenticeship Network. Her dream is to one day become a principal—someone who creates a kind and supportive school environment she once needed herself.

“I’m still deciding whether I want to work at an elementary or high school,” she said. “Elementary students need that strong foundation, but high school students often just need someone to believe in them. Either way, I want to be that support.”

Maria is already making an impact on campus. She serves as Vice President of the Phoenix Scholars Rising Club, participates in TRIO, EOPS/NextUp, and is a proud Phoenix Scholar. Through her involvement, she helps foster a sense of community among students who may not have strong family support.

“Our club is for students who need that extra support system,” she said. “We tell them, ‘We’ll be your people, your cheerleaders...’”

Her story of resilience has inspired others—especially fellow foster youth and students navigating life transitions. Through student panels and outreach events, she shares her journey openly, encouraging others to believe in themselves and use the resources available on campus.

“Don’t let your past define you,” Maria advises. “Whatever you’ve been through doesn’t determine who you are or what you can achieve. Be your own person. Learn from your experiences, and let your strengths guide you.”

Maria’s determination, compassion, and leadership embody what it means to rise from challenge and turn it into purpose. With each step, she is not only shaping her own future—but also inspiring the next generation of educators to lead with empathy, strength, and heart.
