In honor of Native American Heritage Month, Norco College recently welcomed Dr. Sandy Kewanhaptewa-Dixon (Hopi) as a guest speaker. Dr. Kewanhaptewa-Dixon, a renowned educator and Tribal Liaison at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, shared her extensive expertise in Native American studies, education, and advocacy. With decades of experience teaching in public, tribal, and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools, as well as her leadership in initiatives supporting Native American students, Dr. Kewanhaptewa-Dixon inspired attendees with her commitment to culturally responsive education and Native communities.

The event also featured a performance by the Kupiachum Singers, a family of musicians from the Pala Indian Reservation. The group shared traditional songs that honor the history of the Kuupa removal while celebrating modern Native life, including performances by their young children who are learning to carry forward these traditions. Norco College continues the celebration with an upcoming Virtual Native American Mental Health Panel on Wednesday, November 19, from Noon–1 pm, organized by Health Services in collaboration with Moreno Valley College and Riverside University Health System. This panel will feature student voices and experts discussing culturally responsive mental health practices and ways to reduce stigma in Native communities.

Join us virtually to learn, honor, and engage with the rich heritage and ongoing contributions of Native American communities.
