Norco College Data Science students recently gained valuable professional experience at the Red Rock Data Science Conference, held May 18–21, where they explored emerging trends in the field, connected with industry professionals, and shared student-led research.
Among the attendees, students Tommy Deth and Mikhaela Lewis presented both an oral presentation and a research poster highlighting findings from their internship with Perfect Margin Door Co., a Norco-based business. Working directly with company data, the students analyzed operational trends and provided insights that helped the business owner make more informed decisions.
As part of the project, Deth and Lewis also developed a customized application that allows the business owner to monitor key data in real time. The tool transformed complex datasets into accessible, actionable information, demonstrating how data science can support local businesses and drive decision-making.
The conference provided students with the opportunity to share their work with researchers, educators, and industry professionals while gaining firsthand experience presenting in a professional setting. Throughout the week, Norco College students attended sessions focused on the growing role of data science in both academia and industry, learning about new technologies, research, and career pathways within the field.
For some students, the conference marked their first experience attending a professional academic event. In addition to participating in conference activities, students also took part in a hike through the Narrows in Zion National Park, providing an opportunity to connect with peers and experience one of the region’s most iconic natural landmarks.
The experience reflects the hands-on learning opportunities available through Norco College’s Data Science program, where students apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, collaborate with local industry partners, and engage with the broader data science community. Through internships, research, and professional development opportunities, students gain practical skills that prepare them for continued academic and career success.
