Ethnic Studies
Ethnic studies, in the United States, is the interdisciplinary study of difference—chiefly race, ethnicity, and nation, but also sexuality, gender, and other such markings—and power, as expressed by the state, by civil society, and by individuals. Its origin comes before the civil rights era, as early as the 1900s. During this time, educator and historian W. E. B. Du Bois expressed the need for teaching black history.
Career Options
An ethnic studies degree provides an educational background in various cultures and helps a person understand the importance of diversity. This knowledge can be applicable in many careers and this degree programs helps professionals develop transferable skills such as research, analytical and interpersonal skills. Career options for students who get a degree in ethnic studies include: teacher, lawyer, writer, paralegal, editor, curator, grant writer, administrative analyst, rehabilitaion specialist, and probation officer.

Lailah Bezan
Norco College student Lailah Bezan was selected as the 2021 Student of Distinction in the discipline of Political Science.
“I want to become a child advocacy lawyer, and maybe down the line, become a law professor. I just really want to help people,“ Lailah said. “I've always wanted to do that, and I know that the best chance that me being able to help people is to get a good education and give me more power in order to help them effectively.“
