Personal Preparedness

During an emergency you should plan to not have basic services like power, fuel, access to fresh potable water or a grocery store. You may need shelter and should plan on not having access to a working bathroom. This condition may persist for several days 7-10 before emergency aid and support could arive.

  1. Have a Plan
  2. Keep Supplies
  3. Stay Informed
  4. Get Involved

Depending on the emergency you are preparing for you may need different items.

Step 1)  Learn about what types of emergencies are most likely in your area.

Step 2)  Design kits for your needs during that event

Step 3)  Put kits in safe locations that you can access during an emergency.

Survival Rule of 3 and Survival Priorities

For survival situations it is better to remember and prioritize by the Survival Rules of 3:

      • You can survive for 3 Minutes without air (oxygen) or in icy water
      • You can survive for 3 Hours without shelter in a harsh environment (unless in icy water)
      • You can survive for 3 Days without water (if sheltered from a harsh environment)
      • You can survive for 3 Weeks without food (if you have water and shelter)

The main point of the Rules of 3 that we have to concentrate on the most immediate problem first.
