STEM Guest Speaker Series: Dr. Nicholas DiPatrizio, UC Riverside Biomedical Sciences

Dr. Nicholas DiPatrizio is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences at UC Riverside's School of Medicine. The title of his talk is: "Integrative Neurobiology and Physiology that Controls Food Reward, Sensory Processing, and Energy Homeostasis."

His bio: Dr. Nicholas DiPatrizio received his Associate of Arts Degree in Psychology from Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania (1999), Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Temple University (2001), PhD in Neuroscience and Biomedical Sciences from Drexel University College of Medicine (2008), and postdoctoral fellowship in Lipidomics and Neuroscience at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine (2014). In 2015, DiPatrizio launched his independent research program as Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of California Riverside. The DiPatrizio laboratory is dedicated to elucidating the integrative neurobiology and physiology that controls food intake and energy metabolism, and dysregulation of these pathways in metabolic disease and food addiction. A combination of state-of-the-art analytical chemistry (e.g., ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry), genetic (i.e., first-of-kind conditional organ-specific cannabinoid receptor knockout mice), surgical, biochemical, molecular, pharmacological, and behavioral tools are employed to achieve these goals. A primary research emphasis in the DiPatrizio laboratory is investigating physiological roles for the lipid signaling molecules, the endocannabinoids, which are proposed “thrifty lipids" that naturally drive the seeking and sensing of energy-rich foods, and the storage of their energy content for future use. Furthermore, the DiPatrizio laboratory studies the impact of acute and chronic cannabis exposure on cannabinoid system function in metabolic health and disease. This work will support the discovery and development of novel therapeutic strategies to safely treat obesity and related metabolic and behavioral disorders.
