Four Norco College Students Selected to Study in Spain
Four Norco College students from the Student Support Services/Rise program (SSS and SSS RISE) were selected to participate in the Keith Sherin Global Leadership Program to study abroad at the University of Salamanca, Spain. The Program is sponsored by the Council for Opportunity in Education, which provides college access and success for low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities in all 50 states.
There were over 50 applications nationwide including Puerto Rico and only 25 were selected – six were from California – and four out of the six are NC students. The students were nominated by the Program Director in order to be eligible to participate.
Participating students have the opportunity to learn the Spanish language and culture during the month of June while earning college credits. Three of the students decided to live in a residence hall and one opted to live with a family.
“Studying in Spain gives me an opportunity to be a role model for first-generation students and show them that they too can study abroad regardless of income,” said Jennifer Vasquez-Bonilla.
The program classes include Spanish language, history, culture, and art. Weekend excursions are also part of the lesson.
Partial funding was made possible by the Keith Sherin Global Leaders Scholarships, the Associated Students of Norco College, Student Financial Aid, and by the students.
