NC Receives Support to Fund New Centers

NC RECEIVES SUPPORT TO FUND A NEW CHILDCARE CENTER AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER

Today’s passage of the state budget allots Norco College $6 million dollars to build a childcare center for veterans and their families. The money will also help kick-start a workforce development center. The funding was shepherded by Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona).

“Many veterans come to campus with families and need dependable, high quality childcare,” said President Bryan Reece, Ph.D. “Our childcare facility will give veterans peace of mind knowing their children are in good hands.”

The funding will be divided as follows:

  • $5 million in one-time funding for a new early childhood education center at Norco College, which will be the only new early childhood education center along the I-15 corridor. It will complement the future Veterans Resource Center due to open in Fall 2022.
  • $1 million in one-time funding for a new workforce development center at Norco College. The Center will help train students for jobs and provide people already in the workplace with opportunities to improve their skills.
“We are excited to gear up the only workforce development center that will serve western Riverside County,” said Reece. Norco College will offer community education classes and host apprenticeship programs across multiple industry sectors.”

The current Veterans Resource Center serves over 300 students from the armed services. The VRC staff provides veterans with support for financial aid, GI Bill, counseling, academic support, camaraderie, and more. The Military Times has identified Norco College as a top 20 college for supporting veterans three times in the last four years, one of only two California community colleges to make the ranking. The College was also awarded the 2018 Military Friendly bronze award.

“We owe a great deal of thanks to Assemblywoman Cervantes and her team for their continued support and for helping shape the proposal and sending it through the process.” Her commitment to students and veterans is admirable,” said Reece.

Assemblywoman Sabrina Cervantes, also led the effort to secure $2 million for the Veterans Resource Center.

“This state budget is both balanced and prudent. It embodies our commitment to a better California through significant investments in K-12 and higher education; child care; support for California’s small businesses; and measures to combat homelessness, said Assemblywoman Sabrina Cervantes.”
