The ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE certificate program focuses on the criminal justice system, its organizational components and processes, as well as its legal and public policy contexts.  This includes instruction in criminal law and policy, police and correction systems organization, the administration of justice and the judiciary, and public attitudes regarding criminal justice issues.

Required Courses (27 units)

ADJ-1 Intro to the Administration of Justice (3 units)
The history and philosophy of administration of Justice in America

ADJ-2 Principles & Procedures of the Justice System (3 units)
The role and responsibilities of each segment within the administration of justice

• ADJ-3 Concepts of Criminal Law (3 units)

Historical developments, philosophy of law and constitutional provisions

• ADJ-4 Legal Aspects of Evidence (3 units)

Origin, development, philosophy and constitutional basis of evidence, arrest, search and seizure and interpretation of individual rights

• ADJ-5 Community Relations (3 units)

In-depth exploration of the roles of administration of justice practitioners and agencies

• Discipline Electives (12 units)


Learning Outcomes

• Knowledge of breadth, scope and interconnectivity of the criminal justice system
• Understanding of theories and research in crime, criminality and criminal justice
• Basic knowledge of criminal law
• Knowledge of implications of evidence in criminal cases
• Knowledge of the role of policing and maintenance of positive community relationships

Investigative Assistant Certificate

The INVESTIGATIVE ASSISTANT certificate prepares individuals for entry into criminal law and the criminal justice system.  Students will gain knowledge of how to collect, preserve and document evidence as well as present evidence found at a crime scene.

This program prepares students for the following jobs


Required Courses (15 units)

• ADJ-3 Concepts of Criminal Law (3 units)
Historical development, philosophy of law and constitutional provisions

• ADJ-4 Legal Aspects of Evidence (3 units)

Origin, development, philosophy and constitutional basis of evidence, arrest, search and seizure and interpretation of individual rights

• ADJ-13 Criminal Investigation (3 units)

Fundamentals of investigation, evidence collection, recording and preservation, information, interviews and interrogation and follow-up

• ADJ-23 Criminal Justice Report Writing (3 units)

Intro course emphasizing the practical aspects of gathering, organizing and preparing reports within the criminal justice system

• CIS-1A Introduction to Computer Information Systems (3 units)

Intro to computer concepts, theory and computer applications
*Successful completion of ENG-1A may substitute for this course


Learning Outcomes

• Basic knowledge of the principle components of criminal law and the criminal justice system
• Basic knowledge of the procedures and process of collecting, preserving and cataloging physical evidence
• The ability to properly write official reports related to collection, preservation and presentation of crime scene evidence
• The ability to employ computer technology to facilitate student learning outcomes above
